Explore major garden design styles, then zoom in on Columbus?s landscape legacy with slide walk-throughs of Irwin Gardens and the Miller House gardens.
Take a guided tour through the world of garden and landscape design—starting with a quick, accessible overview of how design trends developed, then moving into the defining characteristics of several influential styles seen today. We’ll compare country/cottage (informal) gardens, formal European designs, Oriental influences, modern landscapes, and naturalized plantings, with clear visual examples of each. The second half of the program focuses on Columbus and the people and firms who shaped its distinctive landscape identity, including the influence of the Irwin/Sweeney/Miller families and Cummings Inc. The evening concludes with a slide-based “walk-through” of two local standouts: Irwin Gardens (1910, formal European style) and the Miller House landscape (1958, modern style).
