Dr. Michael G. Cartwright discuses the text of an abolitionist address, given by 23-year old Larkin Houser in 1855.
The text of an abolitionist address, given by 23-year-old Larkin Houser in 1855, was recently discovered in the holdings of the Bartholomew County Historical Society. Presenter Dr. Michael G. Cartwright will help participants bring into focus what would have been at stake for this college student who argued for the abolition of slavery 166 years ago at Hartsville College, the pioneer College founded by the United Brethren Church in Bartholomew County. Larkin Houser was the son of Bartholomew County pioneer Jacob Houser. Prof. Cartwright has made several public presentations over the last five years as part of the work of the Hartsville College Archive Project, organized by the University of Indianapolis working in collaboration with the Yellow Trail Museum.
