BCPL Eastside is a place to gather, browse a collection of various popular resources and serve as a material pickup/drop-off location. There is wireless access, computers to use, and printing, copying, and scanning services available. Hours and services will be evaluated as the location evolves.
Roby and America Anderson devoted their lives to helping others. Though humble by nature, they sparked a movement that empowered East Columbus neighbors to support one another.
In 1975, they opened the Eastside Community Center in their home garage, and in 1979 the work expanded to 421 McClure Road. There, social activities, meals, and shared support created what former Mayor Jim Lienhoop called a “sense of place.” More than a building, it was family.
By 2013, financial challenges limited the center’s operations despite strong community support. A revival began in 2016, but funding remained difficult.
In late 2024, the Bartholomew County Public Library’s strategic plan identified the need for a permanent Eastside location. Working with the City of Columbus, BCPL assumed ownership of the building at 421 McClure Road, completed a full interior renovation, and on January 29, 2026, opened the BCPL Eastside Branch. The goal is simple: to carry forward the Andersons’ legacy by creating a welcoming place where the community has a voice.
