Learn about a local legend Don Norton who served as a shipwright in the U.S. Navy from July 1917 to January 1919 through his letters to family. Sent to the North Sea on the USS Aroostook a mine layer he includes drawings and conveys a dry sense of humor as he writes about his mundane daily duties and the hair-raising experiences of rough seas and dangerous missions. For the past 18 months volunteer Candy Carr with the Bartholomew County Historical Society transcribed and scanned Norton's letters and now shares them with you.
